Cairns Esplanade Multi-purpose Sports Court
The Cairns Esplanade is a well-used area attracting 1.5 million visitations each year. The installation of the 3 on 3 Basketball and multi-purpose Sports Court next to the existing skate park and volleyball courts – enhances the activity precinct.
This project showcases the sport of basketball to the community of Cairns, providing facilities for local tournaments to engage youth and adults, encouraging active sport and opportunity for community connectivity. As a fully accessible and wheelchair friendly court, the court provides for all levels of fitness and skills.
As well as Basketball, the court has been constructed to suit Soccer, Hockey, Footsul, Badminton, Volleyball, Netball. This project compliments Cairns Regional Council’s Active Living program, encourages healthy living for Cairns residents and provides further opportunity to engage with the City’s youth, while providing infrastructure for the City and its visitors.
The court was delivered as part of the Public Domain Improvement Program (PDIP), which funds minor capital works to deliver a range of long lasting benefits to the community as well as ensuring the best possible experience for visitors during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will transform the Gold Coast and Queensland by creating benefits for our communities before, during and after the 11 days of competition. These are the benefits that this initiative will bring to Queenslanders both within the Gold Coast and across our state:
- GC2018 creates opportunities for permanent legacy benefits from infrastructure improvements
- GC2018 inspires Australians to become healthier and happier through an active lifestyle and physical activity.
