Carrara Stadium will host the perfect blend of sport and celebration during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The venue will not only host memorable Opening and Closing Ceremonies, but also track and field events.
On 4 April 2018, the venue will host an Opening Ceremony that will be spectacular and uplifting with surprising moments of theatre, breathtaking visual effects, dancing and music. Eleven days later, the Closing Ceremony will deliver a fitting tribute to the remarkable athletic feats, extraordinary teamwork and marvellous community participation shown throughout the games.
Between the ceremonies, Carrara Stadium will be the venue for athletics events, where fans can experience the tension and excitement of elite level competition.
The $6 million investment has provided permanent lighting upgrades to meet international broadcast requirements for the Games. This includes the refurbishment and repainting of six tower head frames and the addition of 468 new energy-saving light fittings on the tower head frames and under the stadium roof. The new technology will result in less maintenance, reduced energy requirements, and the flicker-free design will enhance the broadcast quality, particularly for slow-motion cameras.
The transition of the stadium from Australian Football ground to athletics stadium will occur in late 2017, with the installation of a temporary 400-metre track compliant with International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) certifications and additional seating to increase the venue’s capacity from 25,000 to 35,000. Other improvements to Carrara Stadium’s facilities are scheduled for completion during 2017 including significant lighting upgrades around the stadium. These enhancements will complement the existing facilities, which include corporate hospitality and function rooms, media facilities (including commentary and broadcast booths and press conference rooms) and athlete change facilities.
Once the Games have ended, the stadium will revert to its existing function as the home of the Gold Coast Suns Australian Football Team.
