Townsville Welcome Sign
This project will involve the construction of a significant art piece, being a community-designed, 2-metre high sign, with the letters spelling the name 'Townsville'.
Constructed from aluminium, each letter will be covered in vinyl and decorated with artwork provided from a range of Townsville community groups. The sign will be located in one of the central business district’s main walking and recreational thoroughfares: Central Park on the banks of Ross Creek. It will become an interactive cultural installation providing visitors with a landmark to touch, walk between, meet with friends and pose for photographs.
It will mark Townsville as a vibrant city, showcase the Ross Creek Waterfront and commemorate the city as a Commonwealth Games location.
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games will transform the Gold Coast and Queensland by creating benefits for our communities before, during and after the 11 days of competition. These are the benefits that this initiative will bring to Queenslanders both within the Gold Coast and across our state:
- GC2018 creates opportunities for permanent legacy benefits from infrastructure improvements
- Through GC2018 creative talent and culturally diverse communities throughout Queensland are celebrated.
