Townsville local realises business dream with help of Be My Guest

Be My Guest attendee Alicia Masters

Proud Townsville local Alicia Masters had always dreamed about making her passion her profession.

With weekends spent experiencing the best of the region’s outdoor activities, tourist attractions and hidden gems, the young entrepreneur dreamed of a job sharing her knowledge with visitors from around world - she just needed a push.

“I had just left a former employer with a redundancy and it really pushed me to back myself a follow my passion,” she said.

“In the time I had off I had successfully applied for new jobs, but my heart just wasn’t in it. My husband encouraged me to go for it, so I began researching full-time for five months.

“We launched North Queensland Tours last year and the reaction has been fantastic. We’re set up in Rambutan backpackers in Flinders Street and act as a one stop shop for tourists looking for a unique experience.

“I’m so passionate about the region and the great tourism operators we have. I’ve done and seen so much here so it’s great being able to share the personal experience with people. I’m so happy to be sharing that with the world.”

In her five months of research, Alicia attended a Townsville Be My Guest workshop which brought her passion further into focus.

An Embracing 2018 Legacy Program initiative, Be My Guest brings together local tourism, hospitality, transport and retail professionals to deliver an authentic guest experience, help boost business outcomes and create a Commonwealth Games legacy for the Townsville region.

Be My Guest will return to Townsville for a final round of workshops from 5-7 March 2018. Click here to register for your free place!

“As a start-up business, Be My Guest was fantastic,” Ms Masters said.

“I went into the workshop with passion and the workshops increased that tenfold. I came out so enthusiastic about how I could help the community when Games guests arrived.

“It’s really important local businesses work together to ensure we’re making the most of tourism and maximising the flow on effect it will have in future.

“We’re so excited to have the Commonwealth Games visit our region and offer guests the best experience.”

Participation in Be My Guest Townsville is free and fully funded by the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program with a contribution from the Australian Government’s Tourism Demand-Driver Infrastructure (TDDI) program.
