QRU Pasifika Program

QRU players

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) has partnered with the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program to lead Pacific Islander communities to a more engaged, healthy and active lifestyle.

The Pacific Islander Community Engagement Project involves a number of activities aimed at promoting community cohesion and pride. These include a Reclink Rugby Program, the Logan School 7s event, integration with the Kings and Queens of Pacific Rugby tournament, Rookies2Reds School Attendance Program, and Queensland Reds Community Volunteer Education Courses.

The project capitalises on the success of existing QRU programs within Indigenous communities and aligns with the organisation’s major focus to create a legacy for rugby in Queensland, for all Queenslanders.

As Rugby Sevens will be played during GC2018, the program represents a great opportunity to engage the Pacific Islander community and improve the sustainability of local sport at a grass roots level.

The project, which was launched in May 2014 at Logan Rugby Club, Slacks Creek, concluded in late 2016.

One element of the project—the Reds Rise Up program—is continuing in 2017 at several Logan high schools. This program encourages Year 7 to Year 9 students to set goals with school staff to ensure they are making positive choices towards their education. Queensland Rugby incentivises the program by rewarding students who achieve their goals, through the provision of Reds apparel and merchandise, Reds player visits and participant attendance to team training sessions and games.
